Insight into My Process:
Some artists possess this remarkable ability to dive right into a painting without planning; I am not one of them. Before embarking on a new painting, I meticulously create a series of thumbnails, which serve as the groundwork for my process, before transitioning to a detailed drawing. This preparatory stage allows me the opportunity to work thoughtfully on the values, defining the movement and focal point of the composition, while also making any important last-minute changes. Once the drawing is completed, I carefully transfer the image onto the Aquabord panel using transfer (graphite) paper. This technique often leaves behind dark lines, so I use a kneaded eraser to gently lighten the lines, ensuring that the graphite does not mix into the watercolors later on. With that foundation set, I begin the intricate process of building several layers of watercolours to shape the final piece. The initial pigment begins pale, yet the subsequent layers are applied in a thicker manner, diverging from the traditional techniques likely intended by the watercolour masters. Nonetheless, this thicker application remains undeniably beautiful and luminous, effectively conveying the stories within the artwork. After all, artists are here to challenge boundaries and venture into experimentation—why follow in the footsteps of others? That’s simply no fun to me. I strive to ensure that my voice remains distinct and not muddled amongst the crowd. Even as I explore and push the limits of watercolour application, my artistic process remains methodical, with each piece reflecting a high level of detail; yet, I wouldn’t have it any other way. As I create, draw, and paint, I find myself completely immersed in the story being told, where the hours fade away and the worries of the day seem to pause—time stands still, and I’m encased in a blissful bubble as I craft a little narrative. It’s a truly wonderful place to be, and I sincerely hope you can see and feel that in the video above.
